What the Camargue is like
It is the delta of the River Rhône, in southern France, between the river’s two arms and the Mediterranean. It is a nature park of lagoons, marshes and rice fields, with flamingos, white horses and free-roaming bulls.
Which town to choose
Arles, with its Roman monuments, is the town with the most hotels and the gateway to the Camargue. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is by the sea, with beaches and mas, traditional farmhouses turned hotels. Aigues-Mortes, a walled town, lies to the west, next to the salt pans.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for birdwatching. Summer is hot and there are lots of mosquitoes. At the end of May, the Gypsy pilgrimage fills Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Getting around
You need a car or a bike: distances are long and buses are infrequent. Montpellier and Marseille have the nearest airports.
