Where to stay in Cantabria
Santander
Santander is the city base: the centre has the shops and restaurants, and El Sardinero, with its beaches, has hotels with sea views. Almost the whole coast is a short drive from the city.
Coast and historic villages
Santillana del Mar, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera are villages with a lot of heritage and hotels in old manor houses. Santoña, Laredo and Noja, to the east, have long beaches and holiday apartments. The coast fills up in August, so book early.
Valleys and the Picos de Europa
Liébana, with Potes as its base, gives access to the Picos de Europa and the Fuente Dé cable car. The Pas and Nansa valleys have inns and stone country houses, perfect for a nature break by car.
