Where to stay in the Dordogne

What the Dordogne is like

It is the department of south-western France that corresponds to the old Périgord, crossed by the river of the same name. It has castles on clifftops, medieval villages and, in the Vézère valley, caves with prehistoric paintings such as Lascaux.

Which area to choose

Sarlat is the best base for the Périgord Noir, with its medieval centre and the valley of the castles close by. La Roque-Gageac and Domme are small villages above the river. Bergerac, to the west, is the wine area and has an airport.

When to go

In July and August there are canoes on the river and lots of people. Spring and autumn are quiet and good for touring the castles. Winter is truffle and foie gras season, but some hotels close.

Getting around

You need a car to get around the valleys. Bergerac and Bordeaux have the nearest airports.
