What the Landes are like
It is the department on the French Atlantic coast between Bordeaux and the Basque Country. It has an almost unbroken sandy beach over 100 km long, dunes and one of the largest pine forests in Europe, with lakes behind the coast.
Which area to choose
Hossegor and Capbreton, in the south, are the surf towns, with more atmosphere and hotels. Mimizan and Biscarrosse, further north, combine beach and lakes and are good for families. Dax, inland, is a spa town.
When to go
June to September is beach season. The best waves arrive in autumn, when surf competitions are held in Hossegor. Outside summer many campsites and beach hotels close.
Getting around
From the Basque Country you can drive to Hossegor in under an hour. Biarritz has the nearest airport to the south, and a network of cycle paths runs through the pine forests along the coast.
