Quirky, spacious, comfortable garden apartment in the heart of Carcarsonne

Liked: A spacious historic home with a great garden. It was well equipped and provided everything we needed (note: we booked the 2-bed ground floor apartment) and had easy access. The location was lovely across from the park and the communication from the team was excellent.

Disliked: The parking is only suitable for a small vehicle and as we were there in August, the bedrooms were warm as the A/C is in the living areas only. Take head of the warnings about sound travelling from the upper floors and the layout. Neither bothered us though.

  Check in stress

Liked: Good view of the Bastille Day fireworks.

Disliked: Check in procedure was incredibly stressful. The hosts had promised to send us our late arrival check in procedure information by 4pm on day of arrival. When this did not happen, at 7pm we called the property. The person answering did not speak English and asked us to send a message via Booking with our request, which we did within minutes. Still no response. The next 2 hours were really stressful trying to get our check in information sent to us, which only happened just before 9pm after we got booking.com reps involved. Not good enough, our worst experience in France by far. Plus the apartment was in need of urgent maintenance, most notably the shower curtain rail. Unless you can speak French, I'd be cautious booking this.

TLC required to achieve its ambitions

Liked: The location of the apartment was the highlight. This very large apartment really needs a makeover and some care and maintenance. Walls and doors have evidence of repairs but have not been repainted, and touch points throughout the apartment are in need of a deep clean. If the right amount of care was put into the property, the price could be raised to cover the cost without detrimental effect on bookings, I feel.

Disliked: Overall appearance and cleanliness of the apartment.
