Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast

What the Amalfi Coast is like

It is the stretch of coast on the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula, between Positano and Vietri sul Mare, close to Salerno. The villages cling to cliffs above the sea, with terraced lemon groves and a single narrow, winding road linking them. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Which village to choose

Positano is the most famous and the most expensive, with colourful houses tumbling down to the beach. Amalfi is the most practical, with more hotels, the boat harbour and the buses. Ravello, up above, is quiet and elegant, and Maiori has the longest beach. Sorrento and Salerno, at either end, have more choice and lower prices, and work as bases.

When to go

From May to September boats run between the villages and everything is open, but in July and August prices rise sharply and the road gets jammed. April, June and September are good months. In winter many hotels close.

Getting around

Seasonal boats link Positano, Amalfi, Salerno and Sorrento and avoid the road. SITA buses run between the villages and fill up in summer. Parking is hard to find and expensive, so many travellers leave the car in Salerno or Sorrento.
