Comfortable, central and - above all - quiet

Liked: It’s the superb central location of the Hotel James Joyce that is the winning feature of this modest, clean Trieste hotel. It’s up a little alley, but as this is as safe an Italian city as you’ll find, that’s a benefit, not a hazard. It guarantees peaceful nights. This is as quiet a place as you’ll find, and yet the buzzy bars are only steps away. One lift serves the upper floors. We were on the 3rd, in 303. Friendly staff, plenty of TV choices, tea-making in the room, and an exceptionally comfy bed.

Disliked: No complaints, except perhaps the cramped shower. Breakfast is a battle of everyone trying to negotiate the narrow corridor to serve themselves. We tried it once (€7.50 pp) but opted for outside alternatives after that.

    Liked: The position

Disliked: The stay was disappointing. Both the shower and bathroom sink were initially unusable, and the breakfast was of poor quality. The reception staff were helpful and arranged for a plumber, who eventually fixed the issues. However, the inconvenience affected our stay, and no alternative room was offered.

    Good location, convenient to parking

Liked: Good location in the heart of old town just off the main tourist street. Convenient to get to from the parking garage a short walk away. The hotel gives you a 15% discount coupon for parking (€20.40 / day with the discount). The hotel says that they have private parking spaces in the garage that require advance reservation, I didn’t reserve a spot. Old building in the historic area on a small alleyway. There is a small lobby with an elevator (lift), The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was adequate size for a short stay, we had a double bed and there was a single bed in a separate area of the room. There was a large wardrobe closet, luggage racks, a desk a large screen TV, WIFI and refrigerator. The A/C temperature is controlled by the front desk. The bathroom was small but adequate for a short stay. There was a large walk-in shower. The breakfast buffet had the basic items, nothing special; the dining area was small but adequate.

Disliked: Some areas of dated décor that need an upgrade. The floor in our room was an inexpensive linoleum tile that was curled on the edges. The rain shower in our room didn’t work and the hand wand had low water pressure. The toilet was too high with an uncomfortable seat, I’m 5’11” and my feet didn’t touch the floor. The good convenient location outweighs the negatives issues.

Liked: Great location within walking distance of the train station and tourist areas. Many restaurants and bars close. A warm welcome at Reception plus helpful information of tourist sites to visit plus restaurants. Lift available.
