What the Minho is like
It is the region in the north-west of Portugal, between Porto and the Galician border on the Minho river. It is green and rainy, with long Atlantic beaches, vinho verde valleys and towns with historic centres. The Portuguese Way and its Coastal variant pass through here.
Which area to choose
Viana do Castelo is the town with the most choice, with an old town, a beach and the Santa Luzia sanctuary on the hill. Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde and Esposende are beach towns near Porto. Caminha, at the mouth of the Minho, looks across to Galicia. Ponte de Lima, Arcos de Valdevez and Monção, inland, are good for rural stays and wine.
When to go
June to September for the beach, although the water is cold. Spring and autumn are good for the Camino and for walking in the valleys. In August, Viana do Castelo holds its Senhora da Agonia festival.
Getting around
Porto airport is less than an hour from almost the whole region. There are trains from Porto to Viana do Castelo and Caminha, and the metro runs to Póvoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde. Inland, it is best to have a car.
