What the Alto Tajo is like
It’s one of the largest nature parks in Spain, in the east of Guadalajara. The Tagus and its tributaries have carved limestone gorges among pine forests, with viewpoints such as the Puente de San Pedro, the Taravilla lagoon and the Salto de Poveda waterfall. It’s a very sparsely populated area, with no big hotels.
Which village to choose
Molina de Aragón and Cifuentes, on the edges of the park, have more hotels and services. Inside, Zaorejas, Taravilla, Poveda de la Sierra and Peralejos de las Truchas offer rural houses and small hostales, close to the walking routes and canoe trips.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking. In summer there’s canoeing and swimming in the river, and in September you can hear the deer rut. Winter is cold and many places only open at weekends.
Getting around
You need a car: there’s no public transport inside the park and the roads are narrow and winding. From Madrid it takes about two and a half hours on the A-2, leaving at Alcolea del Pinar.
