What La Vera is like
La Vera is an area in the north of Cáceres on the southern slopes of Gredos, with cold-water gorges, villages of half-timbered houses, paprika fields and the monastery of Yuste, where Emperor Charles V retired.
Which village to choose
Jarandilla de la Vera has the parador in the castle where Charles V lived while Yuste was being finished, and Cuacos de Yuste, next to the monastery, has a very well preserved arcaded square.
When to go
In summer, for swimming in the gorges, and in spring and autumn for walking. In February, Villanueva de la Vera celebrates the Peropalo festival.
Getting around
Plasencia is about 45 minutes away and Madrid about two and a half hours. A car is best for getting between villages.
