Old town and the castle

The centre of Jarandilla lies between the castle of the Counts of Oropesa, now a parador, and the church of Santa María de la Torre. Along these streets of traditional La Vera houses, with timber and balconies, are the bars, paprika shops and restaurants. If you stay here everything is on foot and you can go out to dinner without a car.

Some streets are narrow and steep, so ask about parking if you are driving.

Garganta de Jaranda and the Parral bridge

Towards the gorge the village opens out into rural cottages, apartments and campsites surrounded by oaks and chestnuts. The Parral bridge and the natural pools are close by, and in summer the plan is to go down for a swim several times a day. It is very popular with families with children and with anyone coming to switch off. In autumn, when the chestnuts change colour, the area is just as pleasant for walking the paths that follow the water.

Guijo de Santa Bárbara

Up the hillside is Guijo de Santa Bárbara, a mountain village with sloping streets and views over the valley. It is the starting point for several routes into the Sierra de Gredos. It suits hikers and anyone looking for cool air in high summer. There are few services, but Jarandilla is a short drive away. It gets quite chilly at night even in August, so bring something warm.

Aldeanueva and Losar de la Vera

Along the EX-203, the road that runs through La Vera, you have Losar to the east and Aldeanueva to the west, both with traditional architecture and their own gorges for swimming. Aldeanueva puts the monastery of Yuste and Cuacos closer to hand. They are quiet villages with rural accommodation and less bustle than Jarandilla. It is the option for touring the area by car, from village to village and pool to pool.
