What the Roncal valley is like

It’s the easternmost valley in Navarre, next to Huesca and France, with the Esca river running through it. It has seven villages of stone houses with steep roofs, beech and pine forests and the high-mountain area of Belagua.

Which village to choose

Isaba is the village with the most hotels and the closest to Belagua. Roncal, which gives the valley its name, is smaller and quieter. Burgui, at the entrance, is known for its medieval bridge and the almadías, the log rafts that used to float down the river.

When to go

In winter there’s cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Larra-Belagua. In summer and autumn it’s a good place for walking and enjoying the valley without the heat. In May Burgui celebrates its Almadía Day.

Getting around

You need a car: Pamplona is just over an hour and a half away. The road follows the river and then climbs towards France over the Piedra de San Martín pass.
