What the Sierra de las Nieves is like
It’s a national park in Málaga province, between Ronda and the Costa del Sol. It has limestone mountains, deep chasms and forests of pinsapo, a fir that only grows in these mountains. Its white villages are less than an hour from the coast.
Which village to choose
Ronda is the town with the most hotels and the western gateway to the park. Yunquera is the village closest to the fir forests and the main trails. Tolox has a spa and rural houses in the valley.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking. In summer set off early because of the heat, and in winter the peaks can have snow, which is where the name, “mountains of the snows”, comes from.
Getting around
A car is the most practical: Málaga and Marbella are less than an hour away. Buses between the villages are infrequent.
