Where to stay in Asturias
Oviedo and Gijón
Oviedo has a small, pedestrian old town, with pre-Romanesque churches on the outskirts; Gijón is the beach city, with San Lorenzo beach and the old fishermen's quarter of Cimadevilla. They are half an hour apart and either one works as a base for the centre of the region.
The coast
The eastern coast (Llanes, Ribadesella) mixes small beaches between cliffs with the nearby Picos de Europa. The western coast (Cudillero, Luarca, Tapia) is quieter, with fishing villages clinging to the hills above their harbours. In summer the sea is cold and the weather changes quickly, so have a plan for rainy days.
Mountains and rural stays
Cangas de Onís and Covadonga are the gateway to the Picos de Europa, with the Lakes of Covadonga and the Cares gorge trail. Asturias has some of the most rural accommodation in Spain: village houses and country hotels in green valleys, almost always reached by car.
