Old town

The pedestrian streets around the cathedral of San Salvador are the heart of the city. In a few steps you go from Plaza de Alfonso II to Plaza del Fontán, with its market and arcades, or to Plaza de Trascorrales. Cimadevilla and Calle del Rosal have shops and bars, and at night the area livens up without big-city bustle. It is the ideal area for exploring Oviedo on foot and seeing the Cámara Santa and the Fine Arts Museum without worrying about transport.

Best-rated in this area: Soho Boutique Oviedo, with a score of 8.8 from 5,639 reviews.

Calle Gascona and La Escandalera

Gascona is known as the 'cider boulevard': a sloping street full of cider houses where the bottle is poured from on high at your table. It is a step from the cathedral and from Plaza de la Escandalera, the city's meeting point. Stay around here if you are coming to eat Asturian-style and want to walk back afterwards.

Best-rated in this area: Nuvō Hotel Boutique, with a score of 9.1 from 5,674 reviews.

Uría and the Campo de San Francisco

Calle Uría is Oviedo's main shopping street and ends at the train station. Beside it is the Campo de San Francisco, a large park right in the centre with walks, ponds and shade in summer. The Teatro Campoamor is nearby. It suits those arriving by train or wanting shops and services close by, with the old town a few minutes away.

Buenavista and the slopes of Mount Naranco

To the west, Buenavista has the Calatrava-designed conference centre and the Carlos Tartiere stadium, so it is often chosen for business trips. If you are after the pre-Romanesque, the road up Mount Naranco leads to San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco, with views over the whole city. The pre-Romanesque church of San Julián de los Prados, by contrast, is to the east, near the road to Gijón.

Best-rated in this area: Eurostars Palacio de Cristal, with a score of 9.0 from 4,591 reviews.
