Where to stay in Extremadura
Cáceres, Trujillo and Mérida
Cáceres has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Spain, with hotels in restored palaces. Trujillo, half an hour away, pairs well with it. Mérida, in Badajoz province, has the Roman theatre and many other remains, and can be seen in one or two days.
Nature
The Jerte Valley, famous for its cherry blossom in spring, La Vera and the Ambroz valley have mountain villages with country houses. Monfragüe is a top birdwatching spot. You will need a car for all of this.
When to go
Spring is the best season. In summer the cities get extremely hot, while the northern valleys are cooler and have gorges and natural pools for swimming.
