The old walled town

Sleeping inside the walls is the most special way to experience Cáceres. Step outside and you are between the co-cathedral of Santa María, Plaza de San Jorge and Plaza de las Veletas. At night the cobbled streets are almost empty and beautifully lit, something day visitors never see. Bear in mind there are slopes and lots of cobblestones, and car access is restricted. This whole area has been a World Heritage Site since 1986.

Best-rated in this area: Gran Hotel Don Manuel, with a score of 8.8 from 8,848 reviews.

Plaza Mayor and Calle Pintores

The Plaza Mayor is the gateway to the old town through the Arco de la Estrella and is lined with terraces. Shopping streets such as Pintores lead down from here, with shops and tapas bars. It is the ideal area for a first visit: the historic quarter is a step away and there is no shortage of places for dinner. At weekends it is lively until late. To see the old town's rooftops from above, climb the Bujaco tower on the square itself.

Best-rated in this area: Gran Hotel Don Manuel, with a score of 8.8 from 8,848 reviews.

San Antonio quarter

Hugging the walls to the south-east is the old Jewish quarter, with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. It is small and quiet, and you can walk everywhere in the centre from here. It suits travellers looking for a charming place away from the bustle of the square.

Paseo de Cánovas and the modern town

The Paseo de Cánovas is the main boulevard of the modern town, with gardens, shops and cafés. The surrounding streets have a wider choice and parking is usually easier. From here it is a short walk up to the Plaza Mayor. It is a practical option if you are driving or travelling for work, or if you want to be in a city with everyday life. You also have supermarkets, pharmacies and other services, useful if you are staying several days.

Best-rated in this area: NH Collection Cáceres Palacio de Oquendo, with a score of 9.0 from 6,076 reviews.
