  a brief trip for the eclipse

  Unsatisfying stay in a potentialluy idyllic rural setting

  Liked: The decor inside the small lodge was rustic and well considered. It's located just a few km from Buitrgo Del Lozoya, a charming and practical village with small shops, cafes and historical sights and easy access to the fast E5 road. Gandullas is a small quiet village set in pleasant countryside. The shower gave good high pressure hot water.

  Disliked: There are no shops or cafes at all in Gandullas - it's essential you have your own transport. The check-in was completely self service via a laborious sequence of online forms to fill in that released first the front door lock, then the room door; all very impersonal and reliant on the region's slow phone signal - hardly a welcoming task to sort out while outside in the mid-afternoon heat. There is no-one around though the breakfast magically appears overnight for all rooms, even for mine that was booked without included breakfast, adding confusion as to whether it should be eaten or not..... The room had no air conditioning. There was a ceiling fan but these airless rooms really need a strong desktop fan for any proper cooling relief. The cable of the bedside lamp was too short to reach any power socket - so the bedside lamp was effectively useless without moving the entire bed (!). The stairs were steep and at night the motion sensor light didn't come on until halfway down the stairs - so first half of the stairs had to be descended in pitch darkness - not very safe!

  Off the beaten track but interesting and adequate for short stopovers

  Liked: The rustic location was interesting like going back in time. The breakfast was adequate but the milk carton was out of date.

  Disliked: Personally I found it very strange not to have anyone in the hiatal and prefer to have a staff present to be there’s someone to ask questions or advice. My biggest disappointment was there wasn’t a restaurant when it said there was in the hostel facilities details.
