Modernista Ensanche

The Ensanche is Melilla's shopping heart. If you stay near the Parque Hernández, Avenida Juan Carlos I Rey or the circular square in front of the Assembly, you'll have Enrique Nieto's façades, the shops and the liveliest cafés all around you. Everything is walkable along flat, straight streets. It's the busiest area in the evening, when people come out to stroll the avenues.

From here you can walk to Melilla la Vieja along the harbour, and the Central Mosque and several synagogues are nearby, a sign of the city's mix of cultures. It's also where you'll find the most places to eat at any hour.

Melilla la Vieja and the harbour

Between the walls of El Pueblo and the dock are the ferry terminal, with boats linking the city to mainland Spain, and the Noray marina. Staying nearby suits you if you're arriving or leaving by ferry, or want to climb up to the fortified enclosures early, before the heat. At night the harbour area has terraces and restaurants with sea views. It's a convenient area for short stays of one or two days focused on the old city.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Melilla, with a score of 8.3 from 943 reviews.

Seafront and beaches

South of the harbour begins a long seafront promenade beside the beaches of San Lorenzo, Los Cárabos and El Hipódromo. The beaches have sand and calm water, and the promenade fills with runners and walkers in the evening. This stretch suits families and those coming in summer to combine sightseeing and swimming. You can walk back to the Ensanche or take a short taxi ride, and along the same coastline there are beach bars and ice-cream shops.

Best-rated in this area: Casa Saphia de Melilla, with a score of 9.0 from 14 reviews.
