We had to leave due to overpowering air fresheners, and no (partial) refund was offered
Liked: The house was very clean on arrival.
Disliked: There was a reed diffuser on every floor, and the fragrance was so overpowering that it irritated our throats and noses. We moved all the diffusers onto the balcony and opened the doors and windows to ventilate the house. However, the smell remained strong. After approximately two hours, my husband’s symptoms were so bad that we had to leave and book a hotel elsewhere. We did not stay overnight. I accidentally sent my first WhatsApp message explaining our departure to the wrong contact. The following day, I informed the owner and included a screenshot of the original message. He expressed sympathy about my husband’s reaction. We paid just over €150, including an €80 cleaning fee. We did not demand a full refund, but asked for the cleaning fee to be refunded given our very limited use of the property. We had neither slept nor cooked there; we had sat on the sofa, and the children had sat on a bed using an iPad. The owner maintained the full cleaning charge, referring to tasks including changing bedding and towels, cleaning bathrooms, washing dishes and removing rubbish. Considering our actual use of the property, we felt that retaining the entire €80 without offering any refund was unreasonable. His only offer was a 10% discount on a future booking made directly with him. This did nothing to address the stay we had to abandon or the additional cost of accommodation elsewhere. We found the handling of the situation inflexible and unhelpful. A willingness to find a reasonable solution when a problem arises is part of good hospitality. That was missing in our experience. We will not book here again and cannot recommend this property.
