Where to stay in Alsace

What Alsace is like

It is the region of north-eastern France along the Rhine and the German border, with villages of colourful half-timbered houses, white wine vineyards and castles in the Vosges. Its Christmas markets are among the most famous in Europe.

Which area to choose

Strasbourg has the widest choice, the cathedral and Petite France. Colmar is smaller and a perfect base for the Wine Route, with villages such as Eguisheim a few kilometres away. Mulhouse, to the south, is cheaper.

When to go

December, with the Christmas markets, is the busiest and most expensive time: book months ahead. Spring and autumn, with the grape harvest, are also good times.

Getting around

The TGV links Paris with Strasbourg in about two hours, and regional trains run to Colmar and Mulhouse. For the Wine Route a car or a bike is useful.
