Where to stay on the Alentejo and Vicentine coast
What this coast is like
It is the Atlantic shoreline between the Tróia peninsula and Cape St Vincent, in the far south-west of Portugal. Much of it is protected by the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, with cliffs, coves and long beaches with hardly any buildings. The water is cold and it is often windy.
Which area to choose
Comporta and Tróia, in the north, have long sandy beaches next to rice fields and some of the most design-led hotels in the country. Vila Nova de Milfontes, at the mouth of the Mira river, is the liveliest village with the most choice on the Alentejo coast. Sagres, already in the Algarve, is the base for Cape St Vincent and surfing.
When to go
July and August are the liveliest months, and it is worth booking early because there are few hotels. Spring and autumn are good for walking the Rota Vicentina, a network of trails along the coast. In winter many small places to stay close.
Getting around
You need a car: the villages are far apart and buses are infrequent. Comporta is a little over an hour from Lisbon, and Milfontes about two. Tróia can also be reached by ferry from Setúbal. For Sagres, the nearest airport is Faro.
