Évora
Évora is the main city, with a walled centre that is a World Heritage Site and places to stay in restored houses and palaces. It is a good base for exploring the surrounding towns.
Towns and herdades
Monsaraz, Marvão, Castelo de Vide and Elvas are white towns with castles. The herdades, large farming estates, many with their own wine, offer rural stays with a pool and lots of space. You need a car.
Alentejo coast
The coast between Comporta and Zambujeira do Mar is one of the least built-up in Portugal, with long beaches and cliffs. Inland, summers are very hot; spring and autumn are the best seasons.
