Fabulous
A fabulous experience
Liked: It was an absolute joy to stay in this beautiful, unique and historic place- room, gardens, the curated living museum- all absolutely wonderful. We cannot recommend this amazing insight into the rural history of Terceira highly enough. Also astonishingly clean- old buildings are so hard to get to that level!
An memorable place to stay for those with a sense of adventure. Bonus: Terceira's best restaurant
Liked: The owner, Gilberto is a warm, welcoming, charming man. He has a vision that is different from most hoteliers... to preserve and educate about the past while operating his hotel & grounds on a sustainable basis. I respect that. For someone who is always on the lookout for different experiences, this place certainly was memorable. The other thing to like was the restaurant which was stunning. I can see why it is considered the finest on Terceira. It was priced reasonably as well.
Disliked: Two things. First, our "home" for 4 nights was a stone cottage built, literally, several hundred years ago. It was retrofitted with modern conveniences like electric lighting, as well as a modern bathroom and kitchen. Unfortunately, the indoor lighting was insufficient by modern standards (we like to read); also, there was no comfortable place to sit indoors. Second, while the place has a swimming pool, we could not use it because it was not functioning properly due to algae. We would have been more inclined to spend time on the property had the pool been functioning
Liked: We liked the theme. We liked that the owner got lot of food and kept in the kitchen for our breakfast.
Disliked: It should’ve been clean, the beds should’ve been cleaned just the day before and left fresh. One of the twin beds in the last corner room had many bugs on it. Also, there is no washing machine on the property but the listing mentioned so.
The true Azorean vibe
Liked: Quinta do Martelo offers a unique, historic stay in restored stone buildings that feel like a living museum of Azorean tradition. Guests enjoy peaceful surroundings, farm animals, an outstanding local breakfast, and exceptionally warm hospitality. I would definitely stay here again.
Step back in time
Liked: We enjoyed Quinta do Martelo very much. It is a rustic, traditional Azorean setting on an old orange farm. We enjoyed wandering the grounds, looking at the old structures and beautiful plants. Our house was comfortable. Our kitchen was stocked with breakfast items (fresh bread, cheese, meats, jams, coffee). If you are looking to step back in time on the Azores, this is the place for you. Gilbert was very attentive and informative and we loved the on site restaurant which we ate at twice.

Liked: The breakfast lady was a jewel. She matched the authenticity of the place. She truly made our stay more enjoyable! Location during the celebration was good.
Disliked: The facility was very old from the 1800’s. Updated several living parts. If advertised for the experience it provided, we could have been better prepared for we saw upon arrival. Shocked! The insects, the creepy creatures within.
