Where to stay in the Azores

Choosing an island

São Miguel is the largest and best-connected island, with Ponta Delgada as a base and the Sete Cidades and Fogo lakes. Terceira has Angra do Heroísmo, a World Heritage Site. Pico, Faial and São Jorge form the central group, with Mount Pico and whale and dolphin watching.

Getting around

There are flights between the islands and, in summer, ferries. On each island you need a car to reach the lakes, viewpoints and hot springs. Outside Ponta Delgada and Angra, places to stay are mostly small and rural.

When to go

The climate is mild and very changeable at any time of year. Summer is high season, and the best time to see whales is from spring to autumn.
