What the Alpujarras are like
The Alpujarras are the area on the southern slopes of Sierra Nevada, between Granada and Almería, with white villages of Morisco heritage, terraced fields, irrigation channels and footpaths. The highest villages are at almost 1,500 metres.
Which village to choose
Capileira is the highest village in the Poqueira gorge, with views and walking routes. Trevélez is famous for its ham, Lanjarón for its spa and its water, and Laujar de Andarax and Bayárcal, on the Almería side, are quieter.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking. In summer it’s cool at night and in winter it can snow in the higher villages.
Getting around
Granada is an hour and a half from Capileira on winding roads. There are few buses, so a car is almost essential.
