Where to stay in Capileira: the best areas

Capileira, lower part

The entrance to the village, by the road climbing up from Bubión, has the shops selling Alpujarra produce and the restaurants with terraces. The stop for buses from Granada is also here. If you come by car, it will be easier to unload your luggage and leave the car parked for your whole stay.

Capileira, upper streets

Higher up, the streets narrow, with tinaos and flat-roofed houses. The rural houses in this part have balconies over the gorge and views of Mulhacén and Veleta. It is the area walkers choose, because the routes to the river Poqueira and the sierra start at the top of the village. In summer, the high-peaks minibus service leaves from Capileira and climbs the Sierra Nevada track. In winter it is very cold at night, so check there is good heating.

Bubión

Bubión is just below, halfway down the gorge, and you can walk there in a short while on a path. It is the smallest and quietest of the three Poqueira villages, with apartments and rural houses on its steep streets. It appeals to those seeking total rest.

Pampaneira

Pampaneira, at the mouth of the gorge, has more shops selling textiles and jarapa rugs, more bars and more bustle by day. It suits families and anyone wanting a base with a few more services. It is also the gorge village closest to the Órgiva road, the way down to the coast.

Pitres and La Taha

Further east, Pitres and the hamlets of La Taha, such as Ferreirola or Fondales, are linked by old paths among chestnut trees. They are the place for long walking stays away from the day trips. Pitres has basic services and the road to Trevélez runs through it.
