Barrio Bajo

This is the gateway to Trevélez, where the road passes and the ham-drying sheds, ham shops and restaurants are clustered. There are guesthouses and apartments with parking nearby, which is welcome in a village of such narrow streets. Choose this part if you're travelling by car, arriving late or want dinner without climbing hills. During the day it's busier with passing visitors, who stop to eat and buy ham.

Barrio Medio

Climbing the lanes between tinaos, the covered passages, and flat-roofed houses, the Barrio Medio combines village atmosphere with some comfort. You're a few minutes' walk from the bars below but away from the road traffic. Many houses have balconies with views over the valley. It's a good middle ground for couples and those staying a couple of nights. In the mornings it smells of woodsmoke and you hear little but the water in the irrigation channels.

Barrio Alto

At the very top, the houses look straight at the peaks of Sierra Nevada. The night-time silence here is total and the air cold even in summer. It's the place for hikers setting off before dawn for the Siete Lagunas or Mulhacén, as the trails start nearby. In return, arriving with luggage takes effort and there are hardly any services in this part.

Pórtugos and Busquístar

If Trevélez is full, heading down the Alpujarra road you come to Pórtugos, with the Fuente Agria and its iron-rich waterfall, and Busquístar, a small and very quiet village. Both have rural houses and leave you halfway between Trevélez and the Poqueira gorge, handy for touring several villages by car. The views over the Trevélez valley and the surrounding chestnut trees make for a pleasant stay.
