What Las Hurdes is like

Las Hurdes is a mountain area in the far north of Cáceres, next to Salamanca, with narrow valleys and slate hamlets. For centuries it was one of the most isolated parts of Spain. Today people visit for its rivers, its natural pools, the Melero meander and its traditional architecture.

Which village to choose

Pinofranqueado, in the south, is the village with the most services and lies on the Ángeles river, with swimming spots. Nuñomoral, in the upper Hurdes, is the base for the best-preserved hamlets, such as El Gasco. Across the area, rural houses and small apartments are more common than hotels.

When to go

In summer, for the river pools and natural pools, although August is busier. In spring the countryside is green and the waterfalls are flowing, and in autumn chestnut and strawberry trees colour the valleys.

Getting around

Plasencia is about 45 minutes from Pinofranqueado and Salamanca just over an hour and a half. The roads between the valleys are narrow and winding, so allow more time than the map suggests. Without a car it’s very hard to get around.
