What Liébana is like

Liébana is an area in south-west Cantabria, surrounded by the Picos de Europa and closed off by the La Hermida gorge. It has a mild microclimate, with vineyards and vegetable gardens, and stone villages. Its most visited places are Potes, the monastery of Santo Toribio, with the Lignum Crucis, and the Fuente Dé cable car.

Which village to choose

Potes is the base with the most hotels, restaurants and shops, and the best connected to the whole valley. If you want to head up into the Picos, Fuente Dé, Espinama and Pido are next to the cable car and the Áliva routes. Across the Camaleño, Cillorigo and Vega de Liébana valleys there are rural houses and inns.

When to go

Summer is the busiest time, with queues for the cable car. Spring and autumn are better for walking with fewer people, and in November Potes holds its orujo festival. In Liébana Holy Years many more pilgrims come to Santo Toribio.

Getting around

Potes is about two hours from Santander. The road through the La Hermida gorge is narrow and winding. There are buses to Potes, but a car is best for getting around the area.
