Where to stay in Potes: the best areas
Potes
The town grew where the river Quiviesa meets the Deva, with old stone bridges and wooden balconies on its houses. In the centre rises the Torre del Infantado, and across the river the Solana quarter climbs with its cobbled streets.
Here are the restaurants serving cocido lebaniego, the shops and the services for the whole district. It is the convenient option if you plan a different trip each day and do not want to drive to dinner. In high season parking in the centre gets tricky, so ask whether your accommodation has a space.
Santo Toribio and the Camaleño valley
On the hillside, very close to Potes, stands the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, which keeps the Lignum Crucis. From there the road follows the Deva up towards Fuente Dé, crossing the Camaleño valley and villages such as Turieno, Los Llanos and Cosgaya.
The villages have rural houses and small places to stay with views of the Picos de Europa. The cable car and the mountain routes are closer. Ideal for walkers who want an early start.
Lebeña and the La Hermida gorge
To the north, the road runs between rock walls through the La Hermida gorge. At its entrance is Lebeña, with the pre-Romanesque church of Santa María, and other villages of the Cillorigo de Liébana municipality. It is a good choice if you are coming from the coast and want to split your trip between Liébana and the sea.
Vega de Liébana
To the south, following the Deva valley towards the San Glorio pass, lies Vega de Liébana. It is a farming and grazing area, with meadows and small villages. Perfect for those who want total silence and do not mind driving to Potes for more services. From here it is also easy to cross into León over that mountain pass.
