Where to stay in the Matarraña

What the Matarraña is like

It’s an area in the east of Teruel, next to Tarragona and Castellón, with medieval stone villages, olive groves and rivers with pools, such as the Parrizal de Beceite. Its landscape has earned it the nickname of the Aragonese Tuscany.

Which village to choose

Valderrobres, with its castle and Gothic bridge, is the capital and has the most services. Calaceite has an arcaded square and grand houses, and across the rest of the area there are restored farmhouses and charming rural hotels, many with pools.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal for walking. In summer the pools of the Matarraña river get busy, and access to some stretches is controlled. On long weekends book early, because there aren’t many places to stay.

Getting around

There’s no train and buses are scarce, so you need a car. Alcañiz is about 35 km from Valderrobres, and Zaragoza and Tarragona less than two hours away.
