Which town to choose
Elizondo is the capital of the Baztán valley, with manor houses and rural hotels. Ochagavía, in the Salazar valley, is the gateway to Irati, and Roncesvalles has its collegiate church and lodging for pilgrims.
When to go
Autumn is the most beautiful time, with the Irati beech forest in full colour. Summer brings good walking weather, and during San Fermín, in July, prices in the area go up too.
Getting around
Pamplona is an hour from almost all the valleys. There are few buses, and a car is the practical way to get between villages.
