Where to stay in Elizondo: the best areas

Elizondo and Elbete

The valley’s capital stretches along the river Baztán, with coat-of-arms manor houses, the Arizkunenea palace and the town hall. Next to it, Elbete forms practically the same village. Here you have shops, bars, restaurants and services you won’t find in the small villages.

Choose it if you want to eat out without driving and explore the whole valley from the centre. The N-121-B road links it with Pamplona and the French border. There is a pleasant riverside walk for stretching your legs at the end of the day.

Best-rated in this area: Aritza Apartamentos Turísticos Rurales, with a score of 9.6 from 375 reviews.

Arizkun and Erratzu

Heading north, the valley becomes narrower and greener. Arizkun keeps its stone houses and Poor Clares convent, while Erratzu is the starting point for the walk to the Xorroxin waterfall, one of the valley’s most popular outings. These villages have rural cottages surrounded by meadows. They suit families and hikers looking for peace. On rainy days, which are frequent, the paths get muddy, so wear proper footwear.

Amaiur

Amaiur is a one-street village of stone manor houses, entered through an archway, with a mill you can visit. Above the village rises the monolith commemorating the castle, with views over the valley. It is close to the border and to Urdazubi/Urdax, so it works well for combining Baztán with the Zugarramurdi caves. It is a tiny village, so eat early or head to Elizondo for dinner.

Irurita and Lekaroz

South of Elizondo, towards Pamplona, these two villages combine manor houses, churches and farmhouses with quick access to the main road. They are handy if you are arriving from the Navarrese capital or want to set off early for the Belate pass. They have fewer services, but Elizondo is very close for shopping or dinner. Lekaroz also has the former Capuchin college, a large building visible from the road.
