What the Priorat is like

The Priorat is an inland area of Tarragona, with mountains, vineyards on slate terraces (the llicorella) and small villages. It gives its name to one of Spain’s most prized wines, and the Montsant range surrounds it. The Scala Dei charterhouse, founded in the 12th century, is where winegrowing in the area began.

Which village to choose

Falset, the capital, has the most hotels and restaurants and the Modernista cooperative winery. Escaladei and the villages around it, such as Gratallops or Porrera, have small places to stay among the wineries. Cornudella de Montsant and Siurana, in the north, are the base for hiking and climbing in the Montsant.

When to go

The harvest, in September and October, is the liveliest time at the wineries. Spring is good for walking, and summer is hot, although the nights are cool. Outside long weekends the area is usually quiet.

Getting around

Reus is about 30 minutes from Falset and Tarragona about 45. There are trains from Reus to Marçà-Falset station, on the outskirts, but to go from winery to winery you need a car or a tour with transport.
