What the Sierra de Aracena is like
The Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche is a nature park in the north of Huelva, with oak and chestnut woodland, Iberian pigs from Jabugo and white villages. Aracena has the Gruta de las Maravillas, a cave with underground lakes.
Which village to choose
Aracena is the base, with more hotels and restaurants and the castle above the cave. Almonaster la Real has a small 10th-century mosque at the top of the village and is quieter.
When to go
Autumn is the best time, with mushrooms, chestnuts and colourful woods. At weekends and on long weekends many visitors come from Seville.
Getting around
Seville is an hour and a quarter away by car. There are buses to Aracena, but you need a car to explore the villages.
