Plaza del Marqués and the cave

The flat part of Aracena revolves around the Plaza del Marqués de Aracena, with the old casino and the shopping streets leading off it. The entrance to the Gruta de las Maravillas is a few streets away, as are the Ham Museum and most of the tapas bars, where Iberian pork and, in season, wild mushrooms rule. If you come without a car, everything is close at hand here and you can walk to every sight.

Plaza Alta and the castle hill

Climbing cobbled streets you reach the Plaza Alta and, higher still, the castle and the Iglesia Prioral. The houses here are old, with whitewashed façades and patios, and at night there is hardly any traffic. You will like it if you are travelling as a couple and want views over the rooftops and the hills. Bear the slopes in mind if you have heavy luggage or are travelling with older people.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Convento Aracena & SPA, with a score of 9.2 from 2,454 reviews.

Linares de la Sierra and Alájar

To the west, among chestnut groves, Linares de la Sierra is a tiny village known for its llanos, the stone mosaics in front of the house doors. A little further on is Alájar, at the foot of the Peña de Arias Montano. Both are good choices for walkers, because several waymarked paths link these villages with each other and with Aracena. Services are few, so count on a car for dinner or shopping.

Best-rated in this area: La Molinilla Apartamentos y Hammam, with a score of 8.7 from 30 reviews.

Los Marines and Fuenteheridos

Along the road towards Jabugo you will find Los Marines and Fuenteheridos, the latter with its twelve-spout fountain, the Fuente de los Doce Caños, in the square. These are mountain villages with rural houses, fireplaces and vegetable gardens, ideal in autumn and winter. From here you can easily explore the western part of the sierra, with Castaño del Robledo and the Jabugo curing sheds nearby. In fog and rain, a lit fire is part of the charm.

Best-rated in this area: Villa Valeria Moralillo 1, with a score of 10.0 from 14 reviews.
