What the Sierra de Grazalema is like
It’s a nature park between Cádiz and Málaga, with limestone mountains, gorges and forests of pinsapo, a fir that only grows in these mountains. It’s one of the rainiest areas in Spain, and its white villages are part of the White Villages route.
Which village to choose
Grazalema is the most visited village, with small hotels, rural houses and apartments. Zahara de la Sierra has a castle and views over the reservoir. Ubrique, known for its leather, has more services, and Ronda, about 30 km away, is the base with the most hotels in the area.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking. In summer it’s hot by day but cool at night. Some trails, such as the Pinsapar, need a permit from the park at certain times of year.
Getting around
The roads are mountain roads and buses are infrequent, so the practical way is by car. Jerez and Málaga are the nearest airports.
