Grazalema village

Sleeping in the village leaves you a few kilometres from the start of many natural park trails, such as the climb up El Torreón or the Spanish fir forest path. Plaza de España, with the church of La Aurora, gathers the bars and the shops selling blankets and mountain produce. When the tour buses leave, the streets belong to locals and hikers.

The rural cottages and small hotels usually have mountain views, but the streets are narrow and steep: if you have heavy luggage, ask beforehand where to leave the car.

Best-rated in this area: Villa Turística de Grazalema, with a score of 8.6 from 910 reviews.

Benamahoma

This hamlet of Grazalema lies on the other side of the Boyar pass, on the slope facing El Bosque. It has the source of the river Majaceite, a mill and the path running beside the river down to El Bosque, a flat, shady route suitable for children. It appeals to families and anyone looking for a small village with water and trees.

Best-rated in this area: Stay Wild en Las Casitas de Huerta Arriba, with a score of 8.8 from 48 reviews.

Zahara de la Sierra

To the north, past the Palomas pass, Zahara overlooks its reservoir with a castle on top of the hill. It puts you close to the start of the Garganta Verde and the access to the fir forest, and in summer the reservoir invites kayaking or a swim in its recreation area. It has more bars and places to stay than other villages around.

Villaluenga del Rosario and Benaocaz

To the south, these two small villages occupy the area of the Sierra del Caíllo and the Llanos del Republicano, with limestone and sinkholes. Villaluenga is known for its payoyo cheeses and Benaocaz for the old paved track down to Ubrique. They are for anyone after real silence and trails without crowds.
