Very good
Not a good experience although she did offer to refund us our €10 for the taxi
Liked: Room was large and comfortable. Cena (meal) was very good but limited for vegetarians.
Disliked: The free taxi service is essential as the property is 2.2km off the Camino. It is in an isolated rural location with literally not a soul around. If you like isolation then it’s fine. Taxi pickup from Castaneda was no problem, but the drop-off in the morning was with a different person who took us to Arzua despite our request that we be dropped off at our pick-up location (as advertised). This caused us a delay of 1.5 hours as we had to get a taxi back to Castaneda to continue our walk.
Ask questions before booking, and read reviews
Liked: Pilar was friendly and helpful, met us and guided us in to the location which was hard to find because of a road closure. She also tried to help me use the washing machine, and when she couldn't get it to function either, she took our laundry and washed it at her place and brought it back folded. That was really nice.
Disliked: Well, I booked this place as a rest stopover for my kids because of the photo of the pool. When we arrived I found there is no pool, so that basically wasted 2 days of our vacation. There are tons of mosquitos at night and we got badly bitten, so much so that there was blood on my sheet from squishing them. Mosquito nets over the beds would have helped. It wasnt very clean, spiders in the shower, etc. Also, there was no indication in the advertising that this place is right next to, a dairy so the smelll of manure and fermented silage was overwhelming when the breeze came from that direction. So sad to see the cows in dark sheds eating that nasty stuff and piled up in such close quarters. And of course there were flies as well as mosquitos. My kids decided to be vegan from the experience. The only basic kitchen item provided was salt and the location remote. Thankfully I have a car and went to the store for coffee, but if we had been on foot we would have done without. I look for the positives, so was glad to see there was a clothes washer... but we couldn't get it to work. Fortunately Pilar came to our rescue and washed our clothes, which I had already poured soap over. After we left I looked at the reviews mire closely and saw that many people also mentioned that there was no pool, and the horrible smell. I should have done more research instead of just looking at the photos. I felt the place was misrepresented. Fortunately we didnt fall into the trap of accepting the dinner invitation and finding out there was a huge charge, as some people reported in their reviews.
Charming bit of relative luxury for Camino peregrinos
Liked: We loved our stay at Vila Peregrina. The free taxi service worked perfectly: Pilar was in touch by WhatsApp, completely flexible about what time she picked us up, and from where in Arzúa (or Castañeda) and arrived with a huge smile and great energy, then came back the next morning dead on time to take us back. Vila Peregrina is a charming farmstead and we adored our carved bedstead, the spacious en-suite bathroom and the rustic ambience. The woman hosting was absolutely charming, happy to converse through Google Translate and willing to help with dietary requirements etc, while an excellent pilgrim meal and breakfast.
Disliked: The only thing that could have improved our stay would have been a warning about the mosquitos, and maybe even the complementary use of a can of fly spray: I got bitten over 100 times! So don't hesitate to stay; just keep the bedroom windows shut in the evening!
My experience was wonderful all around
Liked: Beautiful facility
Disliked: It was clean and very well maintained. The staff was delightful.
Very friendly staff, comfortable rooms and amazing old style architecture!
Liked: Great place for people who love ancient Galician type of architecture with exposed stones!
Disliked: N/a
Liked: Loved the room and the location. It's a really beautiful old home in a rural setting. The food was fantastic. Huge portions and very very tasty.
Disliked: It is based away from the Camino by a few kms, so the owner picks you up and delivers you back the next day. It took about 45 minutes for collection on arrival, which was no big deal for us, but it could be for some people. However, I would still highly recommend it. The shower took a bit of getting used to, but once I had it figured out it was fine.
