New name, new owners, new surprise fees

Disliked: New name, new owners, new surprise fees I stayed here regularly for two years, back when it had a different name. Since the new owners took over and renamed it A Stay Studios, the standards have clearly dropped. I booked 2 nights with separate beds and paid in full through Booking.com. At check-in, I was told I had to pay an extra €10 to get the room I had already booked and paid for. Nobody mentioned this when I booked, and it was not in my confirmation. Asking for more money at a night-time reception desk, when guests have little room to argue, is not a policy. It is a way of squeezing extra cash out of people. For a guest who had returned for two years, this was a poor way to treat a loyal customer. A confirmed, paid booking should be honored as it was sold. Antwerp has plenty of hotels that do that. Check carefully what you are charged here before you pay anything extra.

Liked: Close to the city center and main train station.

Disliked: Rooms in the ground floor are very dark, there's almost no direct sunlight during the day. Breakfast isn't worth the price. Somobody changes the door lock without notifying us.

Disliked: Both restaurant and bar were closed down without any prior notice as to why or how long. Apperantly they are remodeling/rebranding the hotel. There was no notice of this anywhere. After the stay we have inquired several times to get an invoice (around 6 times at this point). It's been two weeks since the stay and we still have not received anything from the hotel.

No parking available. A dissapointing hotel

Liked: Had all we needed for a 1 night stay. Check in lady was very helpful, and was doing her best at fielding numerous complaints on her own with no support.

Disliked: Disaster from the start. We booked this as it had parking. Drove in pressed the intercom which eventually answered to be told no parking available. Only advice to Google nearby public parking! Forced to reverse out onto the road and park elsewhere. Parking was the ONLY reason we booked this hotel. We arrived at the reception. Door wouldn't open. A guy was there waiting so we tapped on the glass and he let us in. It was 09.05pm. He said he had a complaint and wanted to talk to reception but he had been there 10 mins and seen no one. We tried knocking on doors. Telephoning the hotel. Nothing. Then a young lady came down the stairs, she said she was on her own in reception and was dealing with 2 other customers and an incident. 2 people came in from the street and she tried to placate them with their problem. Then the other guy and his lack of housekeeping problem. Then eventually our check in! She was clearly under pressure, but kept positive even going off to get cold drinks for us as the bar is no longer open The room was fine. Surprised it was just a sofa bed. No bedside tables. Hotel appeared empty at breakfast. Food OK but had been stood out a while as not many people dining. Not a hotel I would recommend or use again.
