What the Dolomites are like
They are a range of the Italian Alps, with pale rock peaks that turn pink at sunset, spread across South Tyrol, Trentino and the Veneto. They are a World Heritage Site and have famous ski resorts and mountain routes.
Which area to choose
Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the Veneto, is the best-known and most elegant resort. Val Gardena, with Ortisei, and Val di Fassa, with Canazei, have mountain hotels next to the lifts. Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, is a good base if you arrive by train.
When to go
December to March for skiing, with the Dolomiti Superski pass. June to September for walking, with the mountain huts and cable cars open. In spring and autumn many hotels close.
Getting around
The nearest airports are Venice, Verona and Innsbruck. Bolzano has trains, and there are buses to the valleys, but a car gives more freedom between the passes.
