What Lake Garda is like
It is Italy's largest lake, between Lombardy, the Veneto and Trentino. In the south it is wide and flat, with beaches and theme parks such as Gardaland; in the north it narrows between mountains.
Which area to choose
Sirmione, on a peninsula, has a castle and thermal baths. Peschiera, Lazise and Garda, on the eastern shore, are good for families. Malcesine has a cable car up Monte Baldo, and Riva del Garda, in the north, is a base for wind sports and the mountains.
When to go
May to September, with July and August the busiest months. In spring and autumn the weather is mild and there are fewer people.
Getting around
Verona is the nearest airport, and Peschiera and Desenzano have trains on the Milan to Venice line. Boats link the villages, but a car is useful for the northern shore.
