Liked: La Casita is very small and crammed full of things, including all sorts of electronic gadgetry. If your preferred aesthetic is “minimalism” this may not be what you want. But my preferred aesthetics are idiosyncracy bordering on chaos and a bit of personal loopiness. La Casita was PERFECT for me. The best part of La Casita, by far, is its very hands-on owner, Dario, originally from Buenos Aires, but more than 25 years in Siracusa. He will not rest until you are happy. He is generous, kind, enthusiastic, warm, and funny. When I wrote and asked him how to get from the bus terminal in Siracusa to La Casita in Ortigia, he wrote back: “Don’t worry; I will come and pick you up.” Not only did he pick me up, but he treated me to a driving tour of Ortigia. He also recommended places to eat, coffee bars, wine bars, gelaterias, and things to see. Everything he did, he did with infectious enthusiasm. We became friends. I have invited him to my home in Poznań, Poland — and I believe he will try to come. On my last morning in Siracusa we had breakfast together at a working man’s coffee bar he knows (Bar Caruso), where everyone knew him and was delighted to see him, and then he took me back to the bus station. By the way, Ely is his daughter on whom he obviously dotes. Don’t be surprised if he becomes your friend too. He means it. There is nothing fake about Dario. La Casita is a perfect reflection of the man.
Disliked: There was nothing I didn’t like. I loved it all. The location was perfect.
Liked: Great location. Pleasant host. Good parking close by.
Disliked: Very soft bed. Too much perfume in the rooms (I am allergic).
