Very good
Comfortable, very good price for what you get
Liked: Breakfast, pool, cleanliness. Most of the staff was very kind and helpful.
Disliked: Some of the stuff (waiter) can be more professional.
Great hotel with awesome views
Liked: The meal at the restaurant was amazing. Our server Ruben was very helpful, professional and attentive. Great rooms, awesome view of Pico.
Disliked: Beds were a bit hard and lumpy. But overall room was clean, organized and pretty. I think the picture above our bed might have been taken. Was missing.
Friendly staff, but nowhere near a 4-star experience
Liked: The biggest positive about Hotel Horta is the staff. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and genuinely seemed to be trying their best. Unfortunately, the hotel itself was a huge disappointment and, in our experience, nowhere near the standard we would expect from a 4-star hotel. The hotel has virtually no atmosphere. The bar was closed most of the time, there was no bar service or music around the pool, and there aren't even toilets conveniently located near the pool area. The pool itself is quite small and is down several flights of stairs away from the main hotel area. We were allowed to take our own drinks from the hotel bar down to the pool, but were then told to bring the trays back ourselves. So essentially, we were carrying drinks and trays up and down several flights of stairs and providing our own poolside service in a supposed 4-star hotel. It honestly felt bizarre. Our first room smelled of mould, the air-conditioning wasn't working properly, the water pressure was very weak and the hot water took several minutes to come through. The bed was EXTREMELY hard — genuinely like sleeping on a wooden shelf — and the pillows were absolutely horrible. After we complained, the staff moved us to another room, which was slightly better, and we appreciated them trying to help. However, the overall standard was still nowhere close to what we expected. In the second room, the shower drain was so slow that the shower tray was filling with water. We removed the drain cover so the water could actually drain away. The following day, rather than investigating why it had been removed, it was screwed back into place. That evening at around 11pm, we ended up with a flooded bathroom. It was the final straw in what had already been a very disappointing stay. We really wanted to enjoy this hotel, and again, the staff themselves were lovely.
Nice hotel in a good location
Liked: Good location, no carpet on floor in room Very nice buffet breakfast, lots of choice Nice pool
Disliked: Nothing
Liked: Comfortable rooms, all looking out over the pool with a lovely view across to Mount Pico. The pool was lovely and the whole hotel, although quite old, was clean and rooms were fairly spacious. The Reception staff were all fabulous. Breakfast was OK but nothing special.
Disliked: It would have been nice to have had a kettle in the room and tea/coffee available. There was a fridge in the room but it went off during the day when the power to the room was off, which kind of defeated the object of putting anything in it!
A lovely stay - we would come back
Liked: The staff were amazing, helpful with taxis and very friendly. The views across to Pico from our room on the top floor were spectacular. The pool area was quiet and calm.
Disliked: We loved this hotel but can see that it would not be any good for people with mobility issues - it was a 10 minute walk down a hill into the town. That said reception seemed to have taxis on speed dial. There was no lunch available at the hotel but most people were out sightseeing. This hotel is not flashy, brand new but is perfectly comfortable with fantastic staff.
