What the Axarquía is like
It’s the area in the east of Málaga province, between the coast and the Tejeda and Almijara mountains. It has white villages of Moorish origin on the slopes, Moscatel vineyards, avocado and mango orchards and beaches on the coast.
Which village to choose
Nerja has the most choice, the Balcón de Europa and the caves. Frigiliana, higher up, is one of the prettiest villages in Andalusia. Torre del Mar, Torrox and Rincón de la Victoria are beach towns with apartments and hotels.
When to go
The climate is mild all year. In summer the coast fills up; spring and autumn are ideal for exploring the inland villages and walking.
Getting around
Málaga airport is less than an hour from Nerja. There are buses along the coast, but for the mountain villages a car is best.
