Torrox Costa, between the lighthouse and Ferrara

This is the liveliest part of the municipality and where almost all the accommodation is. You sleep a step from Ferrara beach, with the promenade lined with beach bars, ice-cream parlours and shops. Next to the lighthouse are open-air Roman remains you can see in a short while. It suits families and anyone who wants to do everything on foot: supermarkets, pharmacies and restaurants are on the same streets.

El Morche

West of the river Torrox, El Morche keeps the feel of a fishermen's quarter. It has its own beach, shorter and a little less busy than Ferrara, and a promenade that invites an evening walk. There are apartments and houses with terraces overlooking the sea. It works well for long stays and for couples who prefer a simple atmosphere, with fried-fish bars right on the sand.

Calaceite and the hillside developments

To the east, towards Nerja, the coast fills with terraced developments on the hillside, with pools and wide views of the Mediterranean. Below lies Calaceite beach, quiet outside August. Almost everything here calls for a car, because the slopes are steep and services are scattered. In return you get silence and a comfortable base for trips to Nerja or Frigiliana.

Torrox Pueblo

A few kilometres inland, the white village clings to the ridge above the valley. Staying here means narrow streets, Plaza de la Constitución with its terraces and cool nights even in summer. The choice is limited: village houses, apartments and the odd country estate among avocado and mango trees. It is for travellers with a car who want to live the everyday life of the Axarquía, going down to the beach only when they feel like it. The streets are steep, so bring comfortable shoes.
