Seafront and the lighthouse

On the seafront, the Levante and Poniente promenades meet by the lighthouse and form a continuous line of terraces, ice-cream parlours and beach bars. Staying on the front means walking down to the sand in flip-flops and eating sardine skewers without taking the car. It is what families with children and couples here just for the beach look for. At night the terraces are lively, especially in July and August. In the streets just behind the promenade there are apartments with terraces a few steps from the sand.

Centre and Avenida de Andalucía

Avenida de Andalucía crosses the town from west to east, with banks, shops and bus stops for Málaga and Nerja. The streets running down from it to the promenade have holiday flats and guesthouses a few blocks from the water. If you plan trips around the Axarquía, this central strip puts you in a good position and the beach is still a walk away. Around it are tapas bars frequented by locals.

Caleta de Vélez

To the east, Caleta de Vélez has a fishing port and marina, a fish market and restaurants serving the local catch. It feels more like a fishing village than a resort. It suits you if you want calm, boat or kayak trips and quick access to Nerja and Frigiliana. From the Torre del Mar promenade you can walk there along the shore.

Vélez-Málaga and Almayate

Inland, Vélez-Málaga has an old town, the Fortaleza and year-round city life, with more choice out of season. It suits you if you travel in winter or care more about heritage than the beach. To the west, Almayate and the coast towards Valle-Niza have rural houses, campsites and less crowded beaches. In both cases a car makes things much easier.
