What the Baztán valley is like

The Baztán is a valley in northern Navarre on the French border, with very green meadows, farmhouses and villages with stone manor houses and coats of arms. It became famous through the Baztán trilogy of novels and films, and it’s a land of forests, rivers and witch legends. To the north, Zugarramurdi and Urdax complete the area.

Which village to choose

Elizondo, the capital, has most of the services, restaurants and hotels, and is the most convenient base. Zugarramurdi and Urdax, to the north, are small and quiet, with the witches’ cave and the Ikaburu cave a short walk away. All over the valley there are rural houses in farmhouses, ideal for families and groups.

When to go

Spring and autumn are very good for walking, although it rains often. Summer is cool and gets busy in August. In Zugarramurdi, the Zikiro Jate festival in mid-August is one of the busiest days.

Getting around

Elizondo is about 50 minutes from Pamplona and an hour from San Sebastián. There are buses from Pamplona, but you need a car to explore the villages and reach the farmhouses.
