Where to stay on the Camino Portugués

What the Portuguese Way is like

It sets out from Lisbon or Porto and heads north to Santiago, crossing the Minho river between Valença and Tui. From Porto it’s about 240 km, and from Tui about 115, the most popular stretch for earning the Compostela. There’s a coastal variant via Vigo and Baiona.

Where to sleep

Porto and Ponte de Lima have plenty of choice on the Portuguese side. In Galicia, Tui, Redondela, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padrón are the usual stops, all with hotels and guesthouses in the centre. Caldas de Reis has spas, good for resting your feet.

When to go

From April to October. In summer there’s a lot of traffic between Tui and Santiago, so it’s best to book. In winter it often rains in Galicia and northern Portugal.

Getting around

Porto has an international airport and trains to Valença. Redondela, Pontevedra, Padrón and Santiago have train stations, which makes it easy to shorten or lengthen the route.
